A conservative region of the mercuric reductase gene (merA) as a molecular marker of bacterial mercury resistance BJM
Sotero-Martins,Adriana; Jesus,Michele Silva de; Lacerda,Michele; Moreira,Josino Costa; Filgueiras,Ana Luzia Lauria; Barrocas,Paulo Rubens Guimarães.
The most common bacterial mercury resistance mechanism is based on the reduction of Hg(II) to Hg0, which is dependent of the mercuric reductase enzyme (MerA) activity. The use of a 431 bp fragment of a conservative region of the mercuric reductase (merA) gene was applied as a molecular marker of this mechanism, allowing the identification of mercury resistant bacterial strains.

Development and validation of an electroanalytical methodology for determination of isoniazid and rifampicin content in pharmaceutical formulations BJPS
Leandro,Katia Christina; Carvalho,Juliana Machado de; Giovanelli,Luiz Fernando; Moreira,Josino Costa.
Tuberculosis remains a major public health problem, especially in developing countries. Brazil presents the largest number of cases in Latin America and is among the 22 countries considered priorities by the World Health Organization (WHO). The Rio de Janeiro state has the largest number of cases registered in the country. The treatment of patients, commonly, makes use of the drugs isoniazid and rifampicin for six months. This study aimed to develop and validate an electroanalytical methodology, using the technique of differential pulse voltammetry for the determination of these drugs in the associated form, in order to evaluate the quality of medicines distributed in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The potential reduction for the isoniazid and rifampicin...

Dietary intake and health effects of selected toxic elements Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Silva,André Luiz Oliveira da; Barrocas,Paulo R.G.; Jacob,Silvana do Couto; Moreira,Josino Costa.
Anthropogenic activities have being contributing to the spread of toxic chemicals into the environment, including several toxic metals and metalloids, increasing the levels of human exposure to many of them. Contaminated food is an important route of human exposure and may represent a serious threat to human health. This mini review covers the health effects caused by toxic metals, especially Cd, Hg, Pb and As, the most relevant toxic elements from a human health point of view.

Health surveillance, biosafety and emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases in Brazil BJID
Cardoso,Telma Abdalla de Oliveira; Navarro,Marli BM de Albuquerque; Costa Neto,Cristina; Moreira,Josino Costa.
The present paper presents compulsory notification data for infectious diseases and epidemiologic ones recorded at the Center for Strategic Information and Health Surveillance (CIEVS) for the period of March 2006 to April 2007. Data is presented in accordance with geographic distribution, time and risk classification of the etiologic agents found, according to Ministry of Health regulations. The importance of this epidemiologic surveillance system is presented, debating the main topics required for quality improvement and information analysis. It is concluded, from the analysis of epidemiologic events and their relation to risk management, that the compulsory notification system in Brazil is incomplete, irregular, delayed and, in a large percentage of...
